Is it possible to walk past one othe largest and more infrequent geysers while in eruption in Yellowstone and be oblivious to it? Well, judging by this photo from around Christmas 2009, the answer is yes! This photo was taken when Giantess Geyser was erupting. Giantess is a very rare treat to see, only erupting a couple of times per year. It can erupt to over 200 feet. It is located on Geyser Hill, across the Firehole River from Old Faithful Geyser. I shot this image with the person in the shot and without, but preferred having the person there for scale.
This frost covered bison was in the Upper Geyser Basin near Old Faithful Geyser recently. Having bison in the geyser basin can be a great photographic treat. Especially when you get 1) a cold morning so there is frost on the bison, 2) morning light, and 3) beautifully lit steam for a background. I shot this at 500mm to ensure I was a safe distance from the bison and also because it's not wise to leave the boardwalks in this area either.
Finally, same bison as above. This shot was taken a few minutes before. The light was just reaching the top of the Old Faithful Inn. I really liked the contrast between the warm light on the building and the apparent coldness of the bison and it's habitat. |
