Snow covered window

The Old Faithful Inn is famous not only for its location but also for its unique architecture.  Designed by Robert Reamer, the Inn was opened to the public in 1903.  While not the oldest hotel in Yellowstone, it is undoubtedly the most well known.  With cloudy skies (but little new snow) dominating the weather lately, I decided to take a few photos of some of the details of the Old Faithful Inn dressed in winter white.  These images were made with a telephoto zoom lens so I could compose the scene as desired while having little room to maneuver.

I am running a special on print orders now through the end of April as well.  The special will be announced tomorrow, Sunday February 7th on the orders page, which can be found here:  www.travelsinbearcountry.com/ordering .

And finally, speaking of orders, I will be back in Europe for most of the month of March and part of April.  So any signed print orders that I receive after February 28 will be processed on April 2nd.  If the prints do not need to be signed, then they will be processed as normal, with about a two week turn around.

Giantess Geyser

Is it possible to walk past one othe largest and more infrequent geysers while in eruption  in Yellowstone and be oblivious to it?  Well, judging by this photo from around Christmas 2009, the answer is yes!  This photo was taken when Giantess Geyser was erupting.  Giantess is a very rare treat to see, only erupting a couple of times per year.  It can erupt to over 200 feet.  It is located on Geyser Hill, across the Firehole River from Old Faithful Geyser.  I shot this image with the person in the shot and without, but preferred having the person there for scale.

Frosty Bison

This frost covered bison was in the Upper Geyser Basin near Old Faithful Geyser recently.  Having bison in the geyser basin can be a great photographic treat.  Especially when you get 1) a cold morning so there is frost on the bison, 2) morning light, and 3) beautifully lit steam for a background.  I shot this at 500mm to ensure I was a safe distance from the bison and also because it's not wise to leave the boardwalks in this area either.

Bison and Old Faithful Inn

Finally, same bison as above.  This shot was taken a few minutes before.  The light was just reaching the top of the Old Faithful Inn.  I really liked the contrast between the warm light on the building and the apparent coldness of the bison and it's habitat.
